Sense of Job Security

Lazy Man was forced to resign a few days ago. He didn’t expect to have resigned until 2-3 years more. I sympathize with him and I am sorry to hear about the job loss.

Last week, I was given an order by higher management to downsize half of my staff. Given this order, I had to choose the less valuable employees to be downsized. It is a hard time for some managers (like me) to even think of downsizing employees because of economical reasons. There may be some who do this as an everyday routine but not I. At the end of the day, I had sent retrenchment letters to some of my most valuable staff. They cried. I cried. But there was nothing I could have done. This got me asking, “where’s the job security?”.

Job security is an illusion created for us by those around us. There is no such thing as job security. It’s not real. My experience has taught me that no matter how hard you work, there would always be reasons and faults not of your own that could get you fired or downsized.

True financial security has been well-researched and has always been found in the entrepreneurial field. Being a business owner gives you greater control and creates more freedom for an individual.

So why do people go with the 8 hour job instead of creating a business that gives them greater freedom and true financial security?

We have been trained from childhood to get a job to earn money. As children, we pull weeds from our neighbor’s backyard, we paint the neighbor’s fences, we deliver newspapers to receive money. We had jobs. Some things we did as children, some things that our parents said created a certain mindset to look for a job in order to have money.

“Should I quit from my job?”, you might ask. I will promptly answer, “No”. But if you ever think of quitting, then you should prepare for unemployment. I am not the one to answer for everyone but I really don’t see any financial security in having a job. There are just so many reasons not to have a job and I intend to resign in a couple of years. I would then start to build a business to generate income for me.

Sometimes we really can’t let go of the idea of having a safe and secure job even though a business opportunity knocks on our door. Even though we have another income generating opportunity. It’s because of the false job security illusion created for us from childhood to adulthood. Do you feel secure with your job?
