Better Management: Learn to Delegate

better managementDo you ever feel that you cannot trust someone else with handling tasks? Do you feel that you need to handle some tasks because you know that if you want it done right, you’d do it yourself? Do you feel tired doing everything yourself? Of course you do. And you know what? That is bad management. You need to learn to delegate.

Delegation is the transfer of power to another. This means someone else besides you will handle the tasks and be in charge of it. What did you say? You’re worried. That’s natural. Often times, managers are control freaks, obsessively detail-focused and so emotional in our tasks that we find it hard to give it up to someone else.

A good manager knows how to delegate. Sometimes, you need to know that you can’t do everything by yourself. One day, you will need to entrust some of your tasks to someone so that you can do the more important tasks that needs your attention. You would free up your time for decision-making for planning and long-term strategy.

Another reason why delegating is important is that people have ownership of the task. They feel that they are responsible for it. They will be passionate and they will take pride in the outcome of a task.

Here are some guidelines you need if you are delegating.

Be sure to let them know what is expected of them. It is vital that people know what role they will play in a plan. They should know what is expected of them. This is specially vital to those new employees. If they are not informed of this early, it will cause confusion, wasted time and effort.

Have trust in your staff. Sure, you need to check them from time to time but do not overdo it. Show them that you trust them. Let them do the job and you’d be pleased by what they have accomplished.

Let them do it their way. Sometimes, our way isn’t always the best way. You have to admit that sometimes, other people have a better way of doing things. But if you don’t give them the chance to show it, you’d never know what it was.

Build your team and entrust them with more and more tasks. The rule is that if a task can be done by someone else, delegate it. Believe me, they will grow into a better team.
