Large communities like webmaster forums thrive on interactions between members. Novices and Experts share opinions. Marketeers get the chance to establish their products. The same goes in blogs.
Blog commenting is one of the oldest marketing strategy of bloggers. In today’s internet world where blogs are built upon communities and communities are built upon blogs, comments have been very important to establish a dialog with readers. This gives readers a chance to participate and feel involved in a discussion or debate about a certain topic.
Blog commenting as a Marketing Strategy
There has been no doubt in my mind that my blog commenting in various blogs have been a key ingredient in generating readership, visitors and branding. My blog commenting on popular blogs has doubled the visitors to my site (which was quite low to begin with ;p ). Nevertheless, it has helped me a lot.
So why is blog commenting so important?
- It helps you develop your own blog’s brand
- It helps to show how you see things differently
- It can generate traffic to your website
- It helps you create some juicy backlinks
Brand Development
Comment Name - On almost all my blog comments I represent all my points of views as a person with a personal opinion and belief.
MyBlogLog Image - The MyBlogLog image in almost all my blogposts use the PinoyTech Logo. Like in most businesses, using a logo to build awareness and familiarity around a blog’s identity can dramatically impact the blog.
Traffic Generation
Blog commenting is a serious traffic generator. Why?
- I believe in the law of reciprocity and I know a lot of bloggers want to return favors - When you comment on other people’s blog, they tend to give you a back a favor by commenting.
- Telling people you exist -Unless, you’re a famous blogger, it would be hard for anyone to know that your blog exists.
- Everyone has his way of seeing things - Everyone has something new to say since everyone is unique. If you have a different way of seeing things, say it. This would definitely create some interest in you.
Increase Backlinks
In today’s blogosphere, it’s uncommon to see a blog without a top commentator plugin. A lot others also have a ‘dofollow’ plugin. But I guess the backlinks are an added benefit to a blog commenting strategy since it’s better to have long term benefits of blog branding than a backlink that will be up for just a day, a week or a month’s time.
Make Your Comment stand out
- Add value to the discussion - A common misconception to blog commenting strategy is making posts like “Nice post”, “Great tips” and “Thank you for your informative post” (Yep, I am also guilty of the charge). It isn’t like that blog commenting is a way to discuss the articles posted and unless you add value to a discussion, you will not be noticed and be just another commentator.
- Ask a question - Spammers are wise and have added asking questions to their lists of comments to ‘distribute’ in the blogosphere. You need to stay away from asking the very obvious questions that have already been answered. Read the blog post thoroughly and you may find something missing.
- Disagree with the community - Do not disagree for the sake of disagreeing. You can instigate a debate based on what you think is right.
Thoughts
While Blog commenting can be good for blogging, it could also hurt. Excessive self-linking and attacking are just two ways of how you can hurt yourself with commenting. If you do it the wrong way, you would end up harming yourself than doing good.
Be responsible with your blog comments considering the fact that they represent you as an individual and/or blogger.
