This is the first discussion in a book review series on The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz, which focuses on setting goals high and achieving success.

the magic-of-thinking-bigIn the preface of the book, The Magic of Thinking Big, the author tells about the story of Harry, a very successful employee that accomplished and achieved so much because of just one important attitude. Thinking Big.

Thinking Big is neither a new technique nor a new scientific breakthrough. The attitude of thinking big has been etched in us since childhood. During our schooldays, we’ve been asked about what we’d want to achieve or become when we grow up. Some of us would choose to be a doctor. Some would choose to be an astronaut. Believe it or not, I don’t think I’ve heard of any child who’d want to become a minimum wage employee when they grow up.

This leads to a very interesting question asked by most people. If Thinking Big accomplishes so much, why doesn’t everyone think that way?

The Environment feeds your mind

The environment plays a big role on the way we think. As we grow up to adulthood, we are barraged with negativity that soon engulfs the inner fire and passion to strive hard to achieve our dreams and goals in life. How often have you heard the phrase, “It’s your fate. Don’t fight it” or “You’ll die trying”? All these tug you down from First Class Street to Second Class Street.

In the book, David J Schwartz also cites quotes various book authors and philosophers of

As one thinketh in his heart, so is he - David

Great men are those who see that thoughts rule the world - Emerson

Near the end of the preface, the author promises to set down theories based not just on opinions and guesses. David promises to give step by step approaches to achieve the benefits of thinking big. He will prove that thinking big magically brings success and happiness to anyone.

It ends with the philosopher Disraeli’s thought, Life is too short to be little.

The next discussion, will cover the first chapter of The Magic of Thinking Big (Believe you will succeed and you Will).
