This is the fifth discussion in a book review series on The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz, which focuses on setting goals high and achieving success.
So, how exactly do you think big? As I read this section of The Magic of Thinking Big, I began to think of our company’s Chief Operating Officer - incindentally, one of the best mentors I have.
He is someone who loves his job and passionately talked to us about our day almost every night. We often talked about resolving issues in my department, but there is something about him that distinguished him from most people I have ever known. He always thought big.
See what can be, not what is
Most people I have come in contact with in the office or in my college days have always had a mild to extreme case of Excusitis. They have always had good excuses to see situations in a negative way. They always had good excuses not to pursue their dreams. The good thing is, I did not get influenced and like our COO, I thought big.
Our COO, often seemingly talked about what can be done for the company to accelerate progressively. He often lectured to sometimes think beyond what is conceivable. He would discuss a topic and where he sometimes play the devil’s advocate. The end result? It opened up our minds to think about the viable possibilities and dark horses.
He once gave me some insights on what’s happening financially to people my age.
Not so long ago, multi-millionaires in their 20’s were unheard of. The only sure way, a person in his 20’s could be multi-millionaires was if he won the lottery or inherit an estate.
Most of these kids did what most people didn’t even try to do. They thought big. Worked to achieve their dreams. Eventually, they accomplished things beyond their dreams
To me, there is a deeply profound connection to why people are successful. My COO’s lectures and this particular section of the book, illustrates the central point here: Success is determined by how we think. The more I think about it, the more I believe that to achieve success, you must have a shift of belief- everything is second.
The next discussion, will cover the fifth section of The Magic of Thinking Big (How to Think and Dream Creatively).
